For about three weeks, the
district of Nacala-Porto, Nampula province in north of Mozambique has been facing a water crisis, and the precious
liquid no longer flows from the faucets of the residents.
So far, the affected
neighborhoods are Triângulo, Mocone, Mathapue, and Maiaia. Residents have been
forced to redouble their efforts to obtain potable water for consumption,
resorting to methods such as purchasing large quantities of water or even
searching for this precious liquid at the famous "Tanque do Povo,"
which was built during the colonial period. Recently, the tank was visited, and
its rehabilitation was promised by the then-mayor of Nacala, Faruk Nuro, during
the electoral campaign.
On the morning of this
Thursday, we visited the famous Tanque do Povo, in the Triângulo neighborhood,
in the Nicandavala area, and we encountered a large number of people of various
age groups searching for this precious resource. During the visit, we interviewed some residents of
Nicandavala:
"I am looking for
water, I live in the Mocone neighborhood. There has been no water for two
weeks, and we are suffering because of this situation. Some young people sell
this water for 5MT to 10MT per bucket, which is not right. This tank belongs to
the people," said the young woman Muanacha José.
"It is hard to
understand this water problem. The city of Nacala will never improve. This
problem has been around for a long time, and I have been living with it since
the previous government, which never solved it," said Cândida Samuel.
We contacted the management of the Water Supply Investment and Heritage Fund (FIPAG) customer service, but the institution did not comment, stating that they would contact us at the appropriate time to discuss the situation.
It is important to note that
the water crisis in Nacala-Porto has become an ongoing issue, as some
neighborhoods have been facing this problem since December. (Gabriel Cassimo)
