The state of degradation of
the building of the Registry and Notary Office of Mecanhelas in Niassa province
in north of Mozambique puts the lives of its users at risk.
The condition of the
building's physical structure has caused concern among the employees. It shows
large cracks, some tilted walls, and a damaged ceiling. The director of the
institution, César Semente, acknowledges the danger to which the employees and
users are exposed.
“We are in these facilities
with the worst conditions. All the walls are cracked. We are afraid that one
day this wall may collapse on the employees, since the wall of the secretary’s
office is leaning, and we sit there with so much fear,” said the director.
The source stated that the
issue is known to the higher authorities, and that construction work for a new
registry office had been underway but was abandoned by the contractor over five
years ago.
“We are waiting for efforts
or statements from the Provincial Services to resolve this issue, they are
aware of it,” said César Semente, director of the Registry and Notary Office of
Mecanhelas, referring to the building's state of degradation. (Jaime Paculeque)
