Niassa: FAMILIES EAT GRASS TO FIGHT HUNGER IN MECANHELAS.

Some people in the Mecanhelas District turn to grass for food due to the hunger that afflicts that area of Niassa Province in northern of Mozambique.

The situation occurs in the locality of Chissaua, in the Insaca Administrative Post, where families use a type of product, grass seeds, locally called Bunga, to feed themselves.

"It’s because of the suffering, the taste is really like grass, it’s not pleasant. We do this to calm the children, fearing they might faint," said a woman.

There are days when families go the whole day without eating.

"It’s a situation of hunger, we sleep without eating," added another source.

The hunger in Mecanhelas is linked to the failure of production in the 2023/2024 campaign, due to drought and dry spells. (Jaime Paculeque)
