Local Voices: Macomia: Litandacua village targeted in attack by suspected islamic extremists

From the district of Macomia, in the Cabo Delgado province, northern Mozambique, another situation unfolded resulting in widespread unrest and the displacement of nearly all the families.

On Tuesday, February 4th, 2025, the village of Litandacua, located in the Chai administrative post in the district of Macomia, was attacked by armed men suspected to be Islamic extremists.

During the incursion, the assailants set fire to several houses and looted goods and food products.

Reports indicate that the same radical group was spotted in Nkoe, another village in the same region, causing the inhabitants of both locations to flee towards the village center in search of safety. The local population lives in a constant state of terror due to these incursions.

Additionally, two men traveling by motorcycle between Nova Zambézia and Nkoe were intercepted by suspected members of the Al-Shabaab group.

During the encounter, the individuals tried to escape, but one of them was shot and subsequently beheaded by the assailants. The local forces attempted to approach the scene to intervene, but their action ended in failure.

However, the men’s motorcycle was recovered. Local authorities are on high alert and are reinforcing security measures in the region to protect citizens in the face of the rising violence attributed to extremist groups. (From Macomia Ricardo Soares Pinto)
