The patients admitted to the General Hospital of Nacala, commonly known
as "Ceta", are being forced to go days without the usual meals that
the health unit used to provide to the hospitalized. Some of the patients'
companions at the unit suspect that this is due to the food scarcity the
hospital has been facing in recent days.
In this context, the patients at this health facility are only able to
medicate while consuming the basic food offered by the hospital, which consists
of porridge made from maize flour.
"I am accompanying my mother, who had an accident in the Memba
district and was transferred to this hospital. I do not stay in the room with
her because I was told to stay outside, in the yard. Regarding the food, they
say the hospital is out of food for the patients. Yesterday, for my mother to
have lunch, I had to buy food from outside because we don't have family here in
Nacala. I am concerned about this issue. Yesterday, I also saw a woman come
back without delivering lunch because the guard said it was delayed," said
young Felismina Tauacal.
"I brought food to deliver. I managed to do so, but my brother went
to get the food at the gate. We are very upset because they say they haven’t
been giving food these days, but before they used to provide breakfast and even
dinner," shared another companion.
We contacted the hospital's management, through the clinical director, to
better understand the situation, but were informed that he was on leave. We
also visited the District Health, Women, and Social Action Service to speak
with the chief doctor, but he was unable to provide further clarifications on
the case.
It is important to note that the General Hospital of Nacala, also known
as "Ceta", is a health facility that receives patients transferred
from neighboring districts such as Monapo, Island of Mozambique, Mossuril,
Memba, and Nacala-a-Velha. (Gabriel
