The population of the Mecúfi district, located in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, Mozambique, is on high alert and preparing for the passage of a severe tropical storm within the next 48 hours.
Despite concerns over the frequent natural
disasters that have affected the country, the local residents say they are
ready to face yet another challenge.
Mr. Selemane Sualehe, 37, and father of
five, speaking to Mozanorte, expressed his concern about the sequence of
extreme weather events but assured that the community is preparing.
“We need to prepare, especially as parents
and heads of households. We must control the children and reinforce our huts
with sandbags to minimize the damage,” he stated, emphasizing the need for
extra precautions.
Ms. Zinha, a 32-year-old mother of three
from Mecúfi, who experienced the devastation of Cyclone Chido in December,
shared her fear and anxiety about facing another storm.
"When I heard about the storm, I was
terrified because I lived through the destruction caused by Cyclone CHIDO,
which took everything I had," said Zinha, referring to the devastating
impact the cyclone had on her life.
She later questioned, “Now, I wonder, will
I go through this again? But I need to be strong and do what I can. I’ve
already tried to protect my belongings, and now I just have to wait and see how
things unfold.”
Local authorities have stressed the need
for constant vigilance and issued guidance on how to protect against flooding
and strong winds. The public is advised to stay informed and follow the
authorities' instructions to ensure their safety.
Mecúfi, like many other regions in Cabo
Delgado, has a history marked by natural disasters, making this storm even more
feared by its residents. (Libério Dinis)
