In
the darkness of night, the silence in the villages of Ntotwe and Chibau in Mocimboa da praia distritict in Cabo Delgado province in northern of Mozambique was
broken by the arrival of a group of terrorists on Tuesday night (4).
They
entered without warning, without mercy, once again imposing terror on a
population already weakened by years of violence.
In
Ntotwe, they did not leave bodies, but they took the sustenance of entire
families, five bags of rice, the food that should guarantee the survival of
those who live there.
In
Chibau, the brutality was even greater.
They killed one person, and another, they beat for no reason other than
the cruelty that marks their actions.
For
the inhabitants of these villages, fear is not a passing feeling, it is a
constant presence. "We no longer sleep well. When we hear that they are
close, we only think about running away", says a resident, his eyes marked
by tiredness and uncertainty.
Violence
is not only in deaths and attacks, but also in the hunger that spreads. Carrying five bags of rice may seem like
little, but for those who already have so little, it's the difference between
feeding your children or watching them go hungry. The war in Mocímboa da Praia is not just
about shooting and ambushes, it is also a war against poverty, against the
despair of not having the minimum to survive.
Faced
with this reality, the population calls for security, for answers, for actions
that can bring stability and hope. (Mozanorte)
