The facilities of the Utuculo Centre,
located in Chimbunila, Niassa Province, northern Mozambique, have been closed
for more than 10 years.
The space has become a hotspot for
criminals and wild animals. It is yet another investment that went to waste.
The Utuculo Centre, a vocational training
institution focused on practical fields such as carpentry, livestock farming,
agriculture, and masonry, was founded in 1999. The institution was one of the
most important in the province and a reference in other regions.
However, in 2013, the centre was closed.
The exact reasons for the closure have not been determined, but it is known
that the institution started showing signs of decay as early as 2010.
The local leader of Utuculo stated that
they were not informed about the reasons behind the closure of the institution.
"As a leader, I deeply regret this.
This place is harming the community. The government did not inform us about the
reasons for the closure," said the traditional leader to Mozanorte.
What worries the community are the ruins
and the surrounding bush, which shelter criminals and wild animals.
"Thieves come from other places to
vandalize the facilities, and then they blame us," added the source.
Two men who work on-site as guards say that
the area is dangerous due to the dense bush.
"This place is very scary, but we are
trying to endure. We ask the government to restore this centre," said
Jóias Patrício, a guard. (Jaime
