They torch homes. In the early hours of today, April 14, 2025,
the tranquility of Mweia village, in Nangade district, Cabo Delgado province,
was abruptly shattered by yet another attack from the terrorist groups that
have plagued the region since 2017.
The smell of smoke mingled with fear, and flames consumed not
only houses but also memories, stored food, work tools, and the hard-won sense
of security.
Accounts from residents who managed to flee are marked by panic and despair.
"They came suddenly, starting to set everything on fire...
we ran without even knowing where to go," said one resident, her eyes
still red from shock and smoke. Many left everything behind: documents,
clothes, food supplies.
Families were separated in the chaos, and as of yet, there is no
confirmation of the number of casualties or injuries.
This attack in Mweia adds to the growing instability in Nangade,
one of the districts that has suffered the most from the movement of insurgents
in recent months.
Even after the reinforced presence of Mozambican and allied
defense forces, many vulnerable points remain exposed, and villages like Mweia
become easy targets, paying with lives and possessions for a war they did not
choose.
While the fire extinguished the physical structures of the
village, another flame that of the people's resistance remains alight.
