The Northern Mozambique Urban Development Project (PDUNM) delivered, this Friday, four new water supply systems to the Municipality of Pemba, directly benefiting around 6,000 residents in the neighborhoods of Mahate and Chuíba, in Pemba city Cabo Delgado province.
The handover ceremony was presided over by the Governor of Cabo Delgado Province, Valige Tauabo, and was attended by the Mayor of Pemba, Satar Abdul Gani, as well as project representatives and local residents.
In his speech, the governor urged the population to take care of the infrastructure as if it were community property and called on the Municipality to ensure efficient and sustainable management of the systems.
Meanwhile, the Technical Administrator of the Housing Development Fund (FFH), Sérgio Rafael, emphasized that the systems now delivered represent the first physical outcomes of the PDUNM. He also announced that, in the coming months, public tenders will be launched for the rehabilitation and construction of other urban infrastructure, such as roads, drainage systems, schools, health centers, community centers, and public lighting in the four municipalities covered by the project.
The four systems delivered two in Mahate and two in Chuíba were built based on six boreholes and have an installed capacity of 30,000 liters each, expandable to 40,000 liters in the future. Each system includes a public standpipe and is designed to accommodate up to 200 household connections.
The infrastructure is resilient to extreme weather events, such as cyclones and storms, and environmentally sustainable, using solar panels for the generation of clean and accessible energy.
With this delivery, the total number of water supply systems implemented by PDUNM rises to eight. The first three were delivered in Nacala, followed by one in Nampula. Three more systems are expected to be delivered soon in Montepuez, in the neighborhoods of Pitimbine, Napai, and Nacate, along with seven additional boreholes in Nacala.
The PDUNM is an initiative of the Government of Mozambique, implemented by the Housing Development Fund (FFH), with support from the World Bank, aiming to promote sustainable urban development in the municipalities of Nampula, Nacala, Pemba, and Montepuez. (Mozanorte)
