Traders from the Chuiba neighborhood, in the city of Pemba, Cabo Delgado Province, have expressed deep concern following the destruction of the local market, a situation that has seriously hindered the continuity of their commercial activities.
According to the vendors, there is currently no designated place for them to operate their businesses, which has generated fear and uncertainty regarding the actions of the municipality. Many say they are temporarily operating in a location considered strategic, due to its high population density and the strong circulation of basic necessities, which are essential for the survival of local families.
In light of this situation, the traders are appealing to the Municipal Council of the City of Pemba to allocate a new market that can serve not only the affected vendors but also the population of the Chuiba neighborhood, which depends on these services.
Following the destruction of the market, the situation has become increasingly critical. “We are very worried because we do not have a fixed place to continue our businesses,” said one of the traders.
According to the vendors, since the Municipal Council visited the area, they have been forced to make constant back-and-forth movements in the process of selling their goods, which has become unfeasible, especially for more sensitive products.
Many traders also state that they no longer have adequate space to work and emphasize that they depend exclusively on this activity for their survival.
Mr. Razak, one of the affected traders, said that his financial and emotional situation has worsened since the destruction of the market. “I have not been well since all this happened. This work is what sustains my life,” he lamented.
The traders are hoping for an urgent response from the municipal authorities to ensure decent conditions for the continuity of their activities and to guarantee a regular supply of goods to the local community. (Seven Mussa)
