The intense rains accompanied by strong winds that have affected Niassa Province since the Christmas period continue to cause serious human and material damage, particularly in the districts of Lichinga and Sanga, where several families have been left homeless, without food, and in a situation of high vulnerability.
In the city of Lichinga, the sharp rise in the water level of the Luchiringo River led to flooding of riverside areas and the submersion of the bridge that provides access to Rovuma University, disrupting the movement of people and vehicles and highlighting the scale of the impacts caused by the severe weather.
In response to this situation, the Governor of Niassa Province, Elina Judite Massengele, visited the affected areas to assess the damage on the ground, express solidarity with the affected families, and guide the strengthening of humanitarian assistance. The Provincial Government’s action is being carried out in close coordination with the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD) and other relevant sectors.
In addition to the destruction of homes, damage has been recorded to public infrastructure, including schools that lost their roofing, as well as difficulties in road access and mobility in several parts of the province.
In the district of Sanga, strong winds tore off roofs and caused the collapse of residential walls, worsening the situation of farmers who lost agricultural produce and seeds intended for the current planting season.
During the visit, the Governor urged the population to avoid flooded areas and to strictly comply with the guidance issued by the authorities, reaffirming the Provincial Executive’s commitment to protecting human life, providing assistance to victims, and working toward the gradual restoration of normality, while the statistical assessment of human and material damages caused by this climatic phenomenon continues.
