Assaults worry residents of Mahelene in Nacala

Residents of the Mahelene neighborhood, in Nacala-Porto district, Nampula province, have been victims of assaults and theft in the Antunes area.

On Monday morning, local residents reported that they have been attacked by unknown individuals who steal various belongings, especially motorcycles.

“We are victims of assaults in this area. We suffer theft of motorcycles, mobile phones, as well as cash. These incidents can happen around 2:00 PM or 5:00 PM, partly due to the lack of lighting.”

“We ask the Government to take action regarding this area. We are injured by unknown individuals, and those who are unlucky are killed. If possible, we request that two (2) or three (3) police officers be assigned to carry out patrols.”

Lito João, a community leader from Mahelene neighborhood, block 57, confirms the acts of assault and theft in the area.

“In the past, we had frequent cases of theft by criminals who broke into homes and stole property. Now they have stopped targeting houses and instead attack people in the streets, especially those traveling between Mahelene and the city and vice versa. They steal motorcycles and other belongings here in the Antunes area, block 57. Every day people are victims of assaults. As a leader, I wonder whether this is linked to unemployment. We ask the relevant authorities to help us put an end to this problem affecting the population.”

It should be noted that many people in the area have already been victims of assaults, suffering serious injuries and, in some cases, losing their lives at the hands of unknown individuals. (Gabriel Cassimo)
