This situation is experienced in Nacala-Porto, Nampula Province, in northern Mozambique, specifically in the Triângulo neighborhood, where residents of the Mercadinho Copuata area cross an improvised bridge that could, in the future, cause both material damage and loss of human life.
Not only is this improvised bridge a concern, but it is also used by minors who cross it on their way to schools located in the upper area, such as Mira Mar Primary School, 1st of June Triângulo, among others.
Residents of the Mercadinho Copuata area, interviewed in the early afternoon of last Tuesday, March 31 of the current year, by Mozanorte, expressed the following:
“We are asking for help from the relevant authorities to solve the problem we have been facing here for a long time. Of course, crossing this improvised bridge is dangerous, but we have no alternative other than risking our lives,” said one resident who lives near the bridge.
On the other hand, some students were also found at the site crossing towards school. They did not extend the interview, but simply called for improvements to the bridge, noting that they also use it during the rainy season, when beneath the bridge there is great depth and a strong water current.
It is worth noting that this improvised bridge in the Triângulo neighborhood, in the Mercadinho Copuata area, has been in use for more than 10 years and has been maintained by the residents themselves. (Gabriel Cassimo)
