The Secretary of State for Niassa Province, Silva Fernando Livone, has appealed to residents of Marangira Administrative Post, in Marrupa District, to remain calm and cooperate with the authorities following the terrorist attack that occurred in the area on Thursday.
The attack resulted in the death of one person and injuries to another, as well as the destruction of several infrastructures at MWA Hunting Area, including a police post, a health facility and a mobile telecommunications tower. According to Silva Livone, the telecommunications tower has since been restored, allowing communications in the area to resume.
The official also confirmed that the terrorists seized vehicles belonging to a company operating in the area and later set them on fire.
Silva Livone further said that around 2,700 people affected by the situation are currently receiving assistance at reception centres established by the authorities.
The Secretary of State assured that the authorities continue to make efforts on the ground to restore and maintain public order, security and peace, while urging residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with the relevant authorities.
The provincial authorities continue to monitor the situation as assistance efforts for the affected population are ongoing.
Clarifying the situation, Livone said: “We had one injured member of the Defence and Security Forces. He is out of danger and was promptly assisted and is currently under the care of doctors. Unfortunately, we recorded one death, and there were also people abducted by the terrorists. We also have people who were displaced from that village to another locality. At the moment, the NGD, together with the Marrupa government, is taking care of this population.” (Ma Mataka)
