It seems as though the
government is angry. In this case, the Government of the Chiúre District is
allegedly denying basic services to the residents of Katapua, putting the lives
of many of its citizens at risk.
Following the riots led by
the locals, with the help of the Namparamas, in the administrative post of
Katapua, which resulted in the vandalism of state infrastructure such as the
PRM command, the post office, the residence of the head of the post, the public
meeting podium, the house of the secretary, and the homes of the neighborhood
chiefs at the post headquarters, as well as the vehicle of the post chief,
public services were forced to shut down in the area due to fear of the popular
rage provoked by the injustice in the distribution of aid after Cyclone Idai’s
passage through the Chiúre District, organized by the International
Organization for Migration (IOM), whose vehicle was also vandalized.
The failure to provide basic
services, such as healthcare, led the local leadership, headed by the Regulo of
the post, to go to the district headquarters, to the Administrator's office, to
ask for forgiveness for the incident, but without success.
This decision has left a
total of 38,443 residents without access to health services at the Katapua
administrative post, forcing them to travel an additional 20 km in search of
healthcare at the Marupa Health Center in the Jonga locality, the main area of
Chiúre.
In contact with Xavier
Celestino, a resident of Katapua and commander of the Namparamas, he stated
that he was unaware of the request for an apology to the district government,
but he informed Mozanorte that, “I don’t know about the apology request to the
district government, but what I know is that they called me and asked us to go
to the town to apologize, and I responded that I don’t see the need to go there
because what happened here is not just in Katapua, it’s all over Mozambique,
even in Maputo this is happening.”
He added, “And so, I haven’t
dealt with this matter anymore. Everything here is shut down, and we don’t know
why. We live like animals. When people are sick, they go to the market to buy
pills. Pregnant women give birth in their homes,” said Mr. Xavier.
Another source stated that
they were unaware of the plan for the apology request, and said that the
population is doing well and does not need anyone to enslave them. (Celestino Carlos)
