Cabo Delgado: Reactions to the New Measure on the transport and sale of liquid fuels in Mueda

The District Service of Planning and Infrastructure in Mueda, located in the province of Cabo Delgado, northern Mozambique, recently issued a statement prohibiting the sale and transport of liquid fuels in plastic containers.

This measure responds to new regulations that establish that, from now on, only galvanized metal containers will be permitted for this purpose, aiming to ensure greater safety for people and protect the environment.

The announcement of this measure in that part of Cabo Delgado has generated diverse reactions, particularly in the municipal town and among the locals, who seek to understand the impacts of this change on their daily lives and local businesses.

Data in possession of Mozanorte indicates that the population is divided regarding the effectiveness and feasibility of the regulation.

For some, like the residents of the famous Maimyo neighborhood, the new measure represents an important step for the community's safety.

"This change can save lives," commented one of them, highlighting that the use of plastic containers for the transport of fuels presents high risks, such as the danger of fires and spills.

The choice of galvanized metal containers is seen as a way to minimize these risks, which directly affect the safety of citizens.

However, despite recognizing the benefits in terms of safety, some local merchants and residents question the feasibility of the measure due to the economic difficulties faced by the majority of the population.

"These containers are not accessible to everyone. Most people here can only afford plastic ones," explained a local merchant, who emphasized that metal containers are more expensive and, therefore, out of reach for many citizens of Mueda.

The issue of environmental preservation was also mentioned as a positive aspect of the measure.

Several citizens pointed out that by reducing the use of plastics, the new regulation could help reduce pollution in the district. (Mozanorte)
