Cabo Delgado: Tension in the Mecufi district - Locals expel mosquito Net registration teams

In the localities of Sambene, Natuco, and the administrative post of Murrebue, in the Mecufi district, Cabo Delgado, northern Mozambique, young people have expressed discontent with the mosquito net registration brigades allocated to their communities. This occurred on Wednesday (22).

According to reports, the teams sent are not composed of local members but rather nurses and other professionals from outside the region, many of whom are siblings or relatives of the individuals involved, which raises questions about the efficiency and inclusivity of the process.

The local youth claim they were not consulted about the selection of these teams and highlight that, while the work being done is important, the community's needs extend beyond the distribution of mosquito nets.

The main criticism is about the lack of attention to local realities and the insensitivity to the community's difficulties, especially after the damage caused by the cyclone, which destroyed many homes and infrastructure.

In frustration, the young people ask, “Nos de Mecúfi, quanto é que vamos ter piscato?” The reference to "piscato" is a request for more job opportunities or benefits, which they feel are being neglected.

According to information available to Mozanorte, they emphasize that, instead of receiving fair compensation for the work carried out in their communities, they are being left on the sidelines, with their homes destroyed and no effective assistance for rehabilitation.

These issues reflect the urgent need for a more inclusive approach, sensitive to local realities, where aid is directed in a way that addresses both immediate needs and the sustainable development of the affected communities.

Local authorities have yet to comment on the matter.

The health director responded by stating that there is a group of people from opposition parties who do not want to follow the rules, claiming that this attitude is even related to political issues. He justified that everything was done with the involvement of local authorities. (Libério Dinis)
