Whenever the rainy season
arrives, the "beaches" of the town of Metangula, in the Lago
district, Niassa province, northern Mozambique, receive garbage carried by the
rainwater that comes from the highlands, flowing down to the lake and, along
the way, dragging solid waste.
It is on these beaches that
the population goes to collect water for consumption and hygiene purposes.
This situation continues to
worry the residents of the Muchenga neighborhood, who point out the lack of
waste disposal sites in the neighborhoods, where the municipal council could
collect and dispose of the garbage, as one of the factors contributing to this
issue.
On the other hand, they
appeal to other residents to burn their garbage at home so that it is not
carried by the water to the beaches, in order to avoid harming the health of
people and animals living in the lake.
"It is sad what is happening, and we have no way out, because this is where we bathe, wash clothes, and even dishes; this is due to the lack of garbage bins, and the municipal council does not collect garbage in the neighborhoods because people throw it in places where rainwater passes," explained a local resident who preferred to remain anonymous.
For his part, António
Eduardo, secretary of the Muchenga neighborhood, said he is concerned about the
situation and promised to organize a cleanup campaign next week.
"I don't like what is
happening, but within a week, I will promote a cleaning campaign on the beaches
because the garbage will bring us diseases," said António Eduardo.
If this situation continues,
disastrous health consequences are expected for the population, or even something
that could have already occurred but hasn't been diagnosed yet. It is strange
that this has been happening for a long time and the authorities have done
nothing to prevent the worst. (Davide
