With the entry of the company DH Mining Development limited, a natural resources (graphite) exploration company, in that part of the district, in Niassa province in north of Mozambique the residents were upset by the evacuation of their production areas.

Recently, the company confronted the population of the district headquarters during one of the community consultation activities held in partnership with the district government.

The activity prohibited the allocation of an area of approximately 250 hectares for the company to carry out its activities, with the aim of eventually creating blocks of machambas (agricultural plots) for the resettled population of Muichi, a zone currently being evacuated with promises of compensation, due to its large deposits of graphite.

According to Pedro da Concessão Jeremias, head of the company DH Mining, the community consultation aimed to negotiate with the population the ceding of the area in question.

“We came to ask the organized population for that space until June, since most of the population present has already planted their seeds. However, if we collaborate until next June, our request should be fulfilled.”

In turn, the population refused, stating that this area is intended for agricultural production, which is the activity that sustains their families.

Tina Caísse, a resident of the Muahagi neighborhood, on the outskirts of Nipepe, said: “I have been working these lands for over 35 years in agriculture. Through the results of the crops harvested here, I can send my children to school, buy household items, and more. Therefore, we do not accept giving up the land, as I see no other means of survival,” she lamented.

However, the administrator of the Nipepe district, Sérgio Agostinho Igua, who was present to witness the community consultation activity, stated that the government would take into account the words of the population who refused to give up the land.

On that occasion, Igua ordered the company to seek another area for its operations.

“We have heard everything the company has said here, and we have also witnessed the complaints of our population. As the government, we will not allow the areas rejected by the leadership to be ceded to DH Mining for its exploitation, unless the company identifies other zones that the population does not use,” emphasized the official.

It is important to note that this community consultation activity took place on January 13, 2025, in the resettlement area of the Muichi population in Nipepe. (Ma Mataca)
