This incident occurred at the Namutequeliua basic
school in the city of Nampula, northern Mozambique, where the school's director
was beaten by a group of students attending the 7th, 8th, and 9th grades on the
morning of this Thursday (6th).
The violence took place after the director
expelled some students who allegedly were not wearing the school badge and ties
that the administration has been requiring as part of the school uniform.
According to some eyewitness accounts, the incident unfolded during classes
when the director, accompanied by a teacher from the school, entered the
classrooms to expel the students who were not complying with the uniform
policy.
The school's requirement is that all students
wear badges and ties, which are sold by the school for 50 Meticais each.
Attempts to contact the school administration for clarification and an official
explanation were unsuccessful.
However, teachers and staff at the institution
also refrained from commenting when contacted about the matter, and the
whereabouts of the assaulted director remain unknown. It is worth noting that
in all basic and secondary schools in northern Mozambique, wearing a tie and
badge is mandatory, and those who do not have this attire may miss classes. (Gabriel Cassimo)
