Jude submerges over 150 houses in Nacala-Porto

In Nacala-Porto, more than 150 houses were engulfed by the waters of Cyclone Jude in the Ontupaia neighborhood.

The Ontupaia neighborhood, in the district of Nacala-Porto, Nampula province, northern Mozambique, was one of the hardest-hit areas, with several houses collapsing and flooding that affected some residences in the port city.

In this context, some families, the exact number unspecified, were displaced due to the effects of Cyclone Jude, which ravaged the Nampula province and coastal districts.

However, some residents of Ontupaia, interviewed by Mozanorte on Tuesday afternoon, shared their experiences of living through this event for three days.

"It's very sad what we went through that day. It was truly a time of great sorrow. Many houses are gone, for example, my house that completely collapsed. I don't even know where to begin, everything is lost," said Mr. Buana Assane.

On the same occasion, Mrs. Josefina Alfredo said she lost almost everything.

"My house was affected by the cyclone. The water came in and flooded the house. My mother and I tried to protect ourselves, but it was in vain. Now we're trying to remove the water, at least so we can sleep, because we've been without rest for days."

"As for me, I have nothing more to say. We are here at this school in Ontupaia, which is a safe place," said Mr. Afonso.

"Until now, there are nine families sheltered here," he added.

Cyclone Jude has already left more than a thousand families homeless and without food in Nacala-Porto. (Gabriel Cassimo)
