25-year-old fisherman drowns in Mocímboa da Praia

A 25-year-old fisherman tragically drowned in open sea off the coast of Mocímboa da Praia while carrying out underwater fishing activities. The incident occurred at approximately 10:40 a.m. on June 14, 2025.

The victim, Arlindo Paulino dos Santos António, was a native of Memba (Simuco), in the province of Nampula, and a resident of Pamunda neighborhood in Mocímboa da Praia. He worked as a professional fisherman and was the son of Paulino dos Santos António and Helena Laia.

According to reports, Arlindo dove to the seabed in an attempt to fix a fishing net that had been previously deployed. However, due to rough weather and strong waves, he became entangled in the net, leading to asphyxiation. Despite his colleagues’ immediate efforts to rescue him and bring him back to shore, they were unable to save his life.

The incident was officially recorded by maritime authorities — namely INAMAR, CCP, INTRANSMAR, and PCLF — as a maritime accident of the drowning type.

A multisectoral team consisting of members from PCLF, SERNIC, Health Services, INAMAR, and CCP was dispatched to the scene. The body was located, and following a forensic examination, the cause of death was confirmed as drowning.

The body was later handed over to the family for funeral proceedings. BP
