INAS rejected from Housing Improvement Project in Nacala-Porto

The "Housing Improvement Project" faced immediate hurdles on May 29, 2025, when it was introduced in the Ontupaia neighborhood. During the team's presentation, the project lead announced their intention to coordinate with INAS (National Institute of Social Action). A representative from INAS was present, and this announcement instantly agitated the community members at the meeting.

The residents vociferously explained why INAS should not be involved in the project. They stated that "if INAS gets involved, nothing will go well because it's not the first time INAS has come here, and there's always confusion with them. So, we ask that INAS withdraw from the project for good work to be done in this neighborhood."

Complaints also arose regarding the abuse of power by block leaders. Residents claimed that whenever opportunities arise for the blocks or neighborhoods, these leaders prioritize family and friends. For others, they allegedly demand money for registration and then also take a cut of the benefits.

Furthermore, residents accused INAS of engaging in corrupt practices in coordination with secretaries and, even more so, with block leaders. This was corroborated by allegations concerning the COVID-19 relief funds, which were supposed to be distributed in three installments. However, some people reportedly received only one payment, and the community has not seen the rest to this day. This is why the population no longer trusts INAS.

During the meeting, the community expressed immense gratitude to the secretary of the Ontupaia neighborhood, Benjamim. They lauded him as the only leader who doesn't have issues with his constituents, unlike the block leaders. They asked him to continue his work with the same integrity.

Even the neighborhood secretary himself confirmed the manipulation by INAS. He stated that he had received numerous complaints from the people and had followed up on the matter, though nothing has been resolved. He was even labeled an "agitator," but he maintains he is simply seeking the well-being of his neighborhood alongside its residents.
