The accident occurred
in the village of João Dias, located 15 km south of Montepuez city, in Cabo
Delgado province. The victim, a resident and native of the same community, was
reportedly leaving Namanhumbir around 6 PM.
The accident was
caused by a cyclist who was with a young man heading in the same direction. The
motorcycle struck the bicycle's handlebars, and due to potholes alongside the
road in that area, the motorcyclist lost control, fell into a ditch, and
sustained severe injuries.
Sometime later, the
man was taken to Montepuez hospital. However, on June 1st, there were many
patients with various issues, including some with similar injuries, leading to
a long wait for treatment. Due to the delay, the family gave up and took their
relative to a traditional healer.
Despite all the
efforts to get the patient to the traditional healer, he couldn't hold on and
eventually passed away. The funeral was held yesterday, June 2nd, 2025, in João
Dias village, where most of his family resides.
The delay in his treatment
at the hospital and even at the traditional healer's led to much gossip in the
neighborhood, with people claiming he was refused care at both places. This is
because when they arrived at the traditional healer's, he wasn't present and
only appeared some time later, stating he wasn't available to work that day.
According to
witnesses at the accident scene, the motorcycle was traveling at high speed in
an area with many potholes along the road. Local authorities are urging drivers
and motorcyclists to control their speed when on the roads.
