Cabo
Delgado Governor Valige Tauabo,
facing pressure from traders, announced on Tuesday in Mueda the resumption of
military escorts on the Awasse-Macomia
stretch of National Road No. 380 (EN380). This measure takes effect from,
July 23, with operations
scheduled daily.
The
decision was made public during the First
Northern Regional Meeting on Security, which brought together
businesspeople from the districts of Mueda, Nangade, Mocímboa da Praia,
Macomia, and Palma, all affected by recurring security incidents along the
region's main access road.
According
to Tauabo, the measure comes in direct response to persistent appeals from the
private sector, which has reported cases of robberies, kidnappings, and
extortion along the route. These incidents have restricted the movement of
people and goods, severely compromising local economic activity.
"This
is a concrete response to the concerns of businesspeople. Starting tomorrow,
escorts will be guaranteed every day to ensure safe circulation," the
governor assured, emphasizing the state's role in protecting the regional
economy.
The
economic operators present welcomed the initiative with relief but stressed the
need for a sustainable approach. "We want this not to be a one-off action,
but part of a continuous security plan," said one of the attending
entrepreneurs, who requested increased surveillance and inspection operations
along the stretch.
The
EN380 is considered a vital corridor for the flow of goods and the supply of
essential items in several districts of northern Cabo Delgado, a region that
has faced successive challenges due to instability caused by armed actions and
criminal activities. The military escort is seen as an urgent and necessary
measure to restore confidence and ensure a return to normalcy in trade and
transport. (Mozanorte)
