The Secretary of Sanjala neighborhood, in the municipality of Metangula, Lago District, Niassa Province, Lucas Jafo, promoted a debate on early unions by convening a community meeting last weekend to address the issue of early marriages and their impact on the community.
The meeting was attended by representatives from IPAJ, IOM, IPAS, and the Public Prosecutor’s Office, and aimed to broaden the community’s understanding of the risks and consequences of early marriages.
During the meeting, Lucas Jafo emphasized the importance of educating children and young people about the dangers of early marriages, encouraging them to prioritize education and personal development. “We do not want our children to become victims of early marriages,” Jafo stated.
Glória Liganga, a participant in the meeting, expressed her concern about the future of girls and pointed to television soap operas as one of the main factors contributing to behavioral deviation among young girls.
In turn, Nordino Selemane Massingue, the district delegate of IPAJ in Lago District, called on the community to combat early unions and to report cases of abuse and exploitation of minors. “As IPAJ, we presented what the law states regarding early unions. There are many cases occurring in the district, but due to a lack of legal awareness, families allow them to happen and do not report them,” Massingue said.
The meeting was considered a success, marked by active community participation and discussions of concrete solutions to address the problem of early marriages in the region.(Davide Muianga)
