“Quatro Caminhos” traders continue operating despite stall demolitions

In Chuiba neighbourhood, Pemba city, the busiest local market popularly known as “Quatro Caminhos” witnessed the demolition of stalls and makeshift structures a few weeks ago, following an order issued by the Municipal Council.

According to verbal accounts from a vendor identified as Mutigi, traders carried out their activities aware that such an action could happen one day, “but we did not expect it to happen so soon,” he said.

Reports indicate that the traders had been notified two months earlier, when municipal inspectors visited the area to mark all stalls, buildings, yards, houses and businesses located along the roadside, where road reserve space had been set aside for future infrastructure developments.

To date, some traders have already vacated the area and sought alternative locations, while others continue operating on site in order to ensure the livelihood of nearby residents by supplying basic necessities.

Despite the situation, reactions among the public have been mixed: while some welcomed the measure, others condemned it, and there were also those who expressed the wish that such road organization should not be limited to the main road only, but extended into residential neighbourhoods to better organize local streets.
