Terrorists vandalize vehicles in Macomia district

The vandalism occurred friday, January 9, 2026, in Macomia District, between the Chai Administrative Post and the 5th Congress area. The vehicles were travelling in convoys from one side to the other but failed to reach their destinations.

It was a day marked by many problems, as a bomb initially exploded and hit a BTR, an armored vehicle belonging to the Rwandan forces. Later, the vandalization of vehicles began in the same area. In addition to material damage, several people were injured, according to the sources.

After spreading throughout the area, the insurgents ordered all vehicles coming from both directions to stop and began searching them one by one. Some drivers had their keys and valuables taken, and several vehicles were looted, with goods being stolen.

People were forced to abandon their vehicles, and most of them spent the night in the surrounding forests. Some time later, the Defense and Security Forces arrived at the scene to restore order.

When the forces arrived, some people who were not afraid tried to recover their belongings, while others were unable to retrieve anything due to the heavy gunfire. Lacking courage, they remained in the safe areas where they had taken shelter.

According to our sources, this was the first attack recorded in 2026 in that administrative post and in the district. One of the injured was a driver who was trying to maneuver his vehicle and was grazed by gunfire on his right shoulder.

It was a very sad situation at the scene. Men, women, and children walked long distances to save their lives. The area between Chai and the 5th Congress is known for frequent terrorist activities.

Mozanorte still does not have updated information on the number of injured and dead at the scene, but the Defense and Security Forces remain on the ground to control the situation. (BP)
