Due to the poor condition of the road leading from the Topuito Administrative Post in Moma District, Nampula Province, where Kenmare operates, the company has decided to replace road transport with air transport for members of the Defence and Security Forces (FDS) assigned to work at its mining operations.
According to information obtained, the vehicles previously used for transporting the security personnel were frequently breaking down and could no longer withstand the deteriorating road conditions. Over the past two months, three personnel rotation missions were carried out using the same vehicles. Some of these vehicles were also used to patrol security posts staffed by both FDS personnel and the company's security guards.
During Kenmare's early years of operation, air transport was provided to all employees travelling to and from the mine. Later, this benefit was limited to the company's senior management, while the remaining employees were required to travel by road. Some sources claim this change was prompted by the poor condition of the road linking Moma and Nampula.
However, others argue that the company's recent decision to resume air transport for FDS personnel may also be linked to the ongoing fuel shortage affecting the country.
Topuito is located in Moma District, Nampula Province. Local residents have expressed dissatisfaction with Kenmare, arguing that despite the company's exploitation of the area's mineral resources, it has failed to deliver lasting benefits to the surrounding communities, particularly in terms of road infrastructure.
Residents recall that during the company's early years, Kenmare built schools and markets and operated a health centre within its premises that provided medical services to many local people. They say, however, that these community initiatives have gradually declined over time.
Travelling from Topuito or Moma to Nampula City remains a lengthy and difficult journey because of the poor state of the roads. Meanwhile, the aircraft used by the company remain inaccessible to the local population.
A local source also stated that the brick houses once built by the company are no longer being constructed, adding that instead of experiencing development, Topuito is now facing decline. (Mozanorte)
