UN Rapporteur’s visit to Cabo Delgado: More than 2,400 attacks Slsince 2017 (03)

The scale of the conflict remains significant. According to data presented by the United Nations, between October 2017 and mid-2026, Mozambique recorded at least 2,408 attacks and 6,632 deaths linked to terrorist violence. Among those killed were at least 2,772 civilians.

The conflict has also triggered one of the country’s largest internal displacement crises. Around 1.5 million people have been displaced from their areas of origin, while approximately 1.7 million people required humanitarian assistance in 2026.

Although some populations have begun returning to their communities, the UN considers that return does not necessarily mean the end of the crisis. Many areas of origin continue to face security problems, a lack of public services, damaged infrastructure, and difficulties in restoring livelihoods.

Violence continues to spread

Ben Saul acknowledges that security forces and their partners have managed to regain control of some territories previously affected by armed groups. However, he considers these security gains to remain vulnerable.

The UN assessment indicates that, over the past year, the frequency, severity, and geographical spread of attacks against civilians have increased.

The armed group maintains a presence in Cabo Delgado and, according to the statement, has also sought to infiltrate the provinces of Niassa and Nampula, raising concerns about the possible geographical expansion of the conflict.

The situation presents new challenges for the authorities, particularly in protecting civilians, supporting the economic recovery of affected areas, and preventing the recruitment of young people. (MozaNorte)
