Cabo Delgado: attempted theft in Chuiba neighborhood in Pemba

The group of young people failed to carry out the theft due to the intervention of the neighbors, an act that demonstrates not only solidarity but also the unity of the residents.

An attempted theft was thwarted thanks to the swift intervention of the neighbors in the Chuiba neighborhood, in Pemba, the capital of Cabo Delgado in northern Mozambique. Two young men broke into a woman's house with the intention of stealing, but they managed to take almost nothing due to the victim's cry for help, which alerted nearby residents.

According to the victim’s account, upon hearing the cries for help and realizing the attempted robbery, the neighbors rushed toward the house, frightening the criminals.

“The wrongdoers were armed with a knife and were demanding money and the woman's phone. In a moment of courage, she managed to call her husband by name, which seemingly confused the robbers,” narrated a resident.

He added, "They then claimed that the woman wasn't married and that they had been watching her for days."

The woman, who was home alone with her young children, said her older children were in the car at a neighboring house where a mechanic was performing some services.

The presence of the neighbors and their quick response prevented the criminals from completing the theft.

“It was a stroke of luck that people arrived on time. I just thought of shouting and asking for help; I didn’t know what else to do,” said the victim, relieved to have been saved in time.

The police were called, and although the young men did not succeed in stealing, the actions of the group are still under investigation, with the local community becoming more vigilant in similar situations.

The quick response from the neighbors serves as an example of solidarity and community action, which is essential for the safety of the neighborhood. (Sifa Artur)
