Due
to Cyclone Chido, many homes were destroyed, leaving many people homeless in
Mecufi District, southern Cabo Delgado Province, northern Mozambique. This tragedy
occurred on December 15th.
As
a result of this phenomenon, the government of Mecufi District is now receiving
humanitarian aid from private organizations, including the National Institute
for Disaster Management (INGD). This institution has recently channeled many
construction materials, including 360 wooden beams, 15 kg of nails, 150 bags of
cement, and 600 zinc sheets.
The
donated materials, received on Saturday, the 18th, will go to 30 families in
the Maweya locality.
The
Administrator of Mecufi, Fernando Neves, acknowledged that the district has
been fortunate to receive various forms of humanitarian assistance.
According
to him, in the first phase of humanitarian aid across the district, about
16,000 families, equivalent to 76,000 people, have received some form of
support over two weeks.
However,
he emphasized that there is still a need to prioritize donations for the
elderly, people with disabilities, and the most vulnerable, although this has
been the adopted method.
In
his words, during the delivery of the materials, the INGD Delegate, Marques
Naba, said that the government feels encouraged, justifying that difficulties
turn into challenges, and that these do not prevent the continuation of
activities.
The
beneficiaries were happy with the support and expressed their gratitude to the
authorities. They encouraged the government to channel more humanitarian aid,
stressing that the situation in Mecufi District remains dire. (Sifa Artur)
