Teachers
from the Mecanhelas District in Niassa Province, northern Mozambique, are
threatening to boycott the opening of the 2025 school year unless they are paid
for two years of overtime and shift work in arrears.
On
Friday (17), the professionals decided to take to the streets to publicly
express their indignation. Holding placards and singing, they marched to the
front of the District Service for Education, Youth, and Technology of
Mecanhelas.
"We
want to know why there is no payment here in Mecanhelas, given that payments
have already been made in other districts and provinces. This is the reason we
have come here," said one of the group members.
The
interviewees mentioned that they have not received the payment since 2023 "Since
2023 and 2024. However, in 2024, some groups were paid, but we have not
received anything yet. In other districts, payments have been made, and we want
to know what the problem is here in Mecanhelas," one of the protesters
expressed in frustration.
With
the start of the 2025 school year approaching, the professionals are
threatening to boycott the scheduled opening on January 31 "If we are not
paid, we will not work or participate in the opening, because other colleagues
have already been paid in other districts, and we here in Mecanhelas still
haven't been paid. We are demanding our overtime and shift payments,"
concluded one of the protesting teachers.
The
PRM (Mozambican Police) arrived at the scene of the protest to intervene, and
during the action, they detained the journalist covering the protest and
confiscated his work material, preventing him from following the event's
outcome. However, it was later reported that negotiations took place with the
district's leadership and the district administrator. (Jaime Paculeque)
