A
low-voltage electric pole, responsible for providing power, was knocked down by
Cyclone DIKELEDI in the city of Nacala-Porto, in the Nampula province, northern
Mozambique, leaving 500 people from the Triângulo neighborhood without
electricity for almost a week.
The
pole that fell last week was located in front of the city's power plant and
supplied electricity to the Tielela and Matola neighborhoods, including the
Capricorn Hospital. After the collapse, more than 500 families were left
without electricity.
On
the morning of Sunday, January 19, our interviewees reported how everything
began.
"We've
been without electricity since the day of the cyclone, as the pole was knocked
down by the wind. A week has passed, and we've tried to contact EDM to resolve
the situation, but they always say they will come to fix it but never show up.
We are stuck in this situation, and we don't know when we will have electricity,"
said Júlio João, a resident of Tielela.
César
Andarusse, a fish, chicken, and frozen goods vendor, said: "I have already
lost everything due to the lack of electricity, everything spoiled. Yesterday,
Saturday, some people started switching to another line. A man who works in the
electrical field said that only trained professionals can handle cases of this
nature."
We
contacted EDM in Nacala, in the customer service department, and were informed
that work is being carried out to restore electricity in the area. (Gabriel Cassimo)
