In the administrative post of Quinga, in Liupo district, Nampula province, the local population rarely goes a month without moving from place to place, sometimes ending up sleeping in the forest due to rumors or misinformation spread by some residents.
About two weeks ago, the population once again sought refuge in the forest because of the presence of a ship spotted in the waters between Liupo and Angoche. The situation caused panic, prompting residents to look for what they considered safer places to hide.
On January 26, 2026, the population of that administrative post again spent the night in the forest after sighting eight unknown vessels traveling from the Mugincual area toward Angoche at around 9:00 p.m.
Unaware of the vessels’ origin or destination, residents fled into the forest out of fear, as the vessels were several small boats, yacht-type, with very visible lights.
After being informed of the situation, local authorities carried out investigations and determined that they were passenger vessels. However, their destination remained unknown, as it was not possible to establish communication with them. When contacted, the maritime authorities in Angoche stated that they had not sighted the vessels in question.
From 2025 to early 2026, the districts of Liupo, Mugincual, and Mossuril have experienced the presence of unknown vessels. This situation is partly due to the lack of maritime resources to intercept them and weak patrols along the maritime zone.
In these areas, fishermen keep their equipment at home, with no camps along the coastline, and cases of theft are frequent. However, for now, the situation has calmed, and there have been no further reports of the presence of these vessels. (Mozanorte)
