When the police
arrived at the Quinga administrative post in the Liúpo district, Nampula, a
citizen who called himself a traditional leader (regulo) and his followers fled
the area, fearing they would be taken to jail.
The situation caused
other people from the neighborhoods who supported this leader to abandon their
homes and seek refuge in the forests.
However, on March 3,
2025, 11 individuals organized themselves with machetes with the intention of
attacking the police officers stationed at the post, who were ensuring the
safety of the local innocent population.
According to
information gathered, those planning the action intended to take advantage of
the departure of the UIR (Rapid Intervention Unit) from the region.
The meeting where the
action was planned took place around 7 PM, but they were unable to carry out
their objective that day and decided to postpone it for another time.
However, due to the
increased activity in the area, a neighbor or a well-meaning citizen from the
location of the meeting called a friend to inform them of what was happening in
the neighborhood, and the information spread.
This is how the
police became aware of their plans before they could act and reported it to the
district command, which deployed additional reinforcements.
Meanwhile, the police
force on the ground, based on the information obtained, has intensified patrols
and investigations to restore normalcy to the area.
Additionally,
the population is receiving weekly lectures, twice a week, aimed at steering
them away from acts of vandalism. (BP)
