Ancuabe: suspected terrorists erect barricades and demand money following governor's statements

A group of suspected terrorists set up a barrier at the intersection leading to the Chaimite base, an area known for the old Machambas of Lomaco, in the district of Ancuabe, southern Cabo Delgado province, on Saturday afternoon, April 12, 2025, around 3 PM.

According to information received from local sources, only vehicles whose occupants collaborated with the suspected terrorists were allowed to pass and continue their journey.

"There are reports that the terrorists are demanding money from drivers traveling on the road connecting Pemba to Montepuez and vice versa," said one of the sources.

The same source, who claimed to have received information from some victims, stated that the incident occurred approximately 100 meters from the headquarters of the locality of Nanjua, on the side coming from the village of Muaja (towards Montepuez).

According to reports circulating among state officials, there is significant concern, especially for those with family members traveling between Pemba and Montepuez or other points in Cabo Delgado or other destinations.

Saturday night, there had been no statements from authorities regarding the incident. However, last Thursday, the governor of Cabo Delgado expressed doubts about whether the demands along the Macomia-Oasse road were made by terrorists, citing differences in modus operandi and assuring that an investigation was underway.

It appears that almost two days after this statement, the suspected terrorists resumed their demands and erected barricades on National Road Number 14, connecting Pemba to Montepuez. (Mozanorte)
