The individual in question is Cesário Carlos Mantinha, 35 years old, originally from and residing in the city of Nampula, specifically in the Namutekeliua neighborhood, under the Mariana Ngwabi Community Unit. He was intercepted by the Mozambican Republic Police (PRM) during a patrol in that area.
The man was approached at around 2 a.m. on October 20, 2025, while impersonating a PRM officer. He was wearing an official police uniform (the “pingo de chuva” model) and stopping citizens on public roads. When questioned by real officers about which police station he was assigned to, he failed to provide any information and was immediately taken to the 4th Police Station.
Following preliminary investigations, Cesário confessed that on the previous day, October 19, around 7 p.m., he had assaulted a PRM officer in the mountain area, which falls under the jurisdiction of the 2nd Police Station, and stole his bag containing the official uniform.
According to reports from local residents, the suspect approached people in an authoritative manner, and no one suspected anything due to the uniform he was wearing. The police later managed to identify the rightful owner of the uniform: Officer Edson Adamo Segredo, assigned to the 2nd Police Station.
The same police source reported that the fake officer was arrested and has been in police custody since 8 p.m. on October 20. The case was registered at the 4th Police Station, which filed incident report No. 20, even though the events took place within the jurisdiction of the 2nd Station.
PRM in the city of Nampula has intensified both daytime and nighttime patrols in an effort to prevent similar incidents, which have become increasingly common in recent times. (BP)
