Residents of the Chuanga
neighborhood in the municipality of Metangula, located in the Lago district
of Niassa province, are expressing their indignation over the high levels of
water pollution in the Lunho River. This river, which flows under a
bridge of the same name, is where they bathe and wash dishes and clothes. The
pollution is contributing to the spread of waterborne diseases.
Users of the Lunho
River's water point to the irresponsible practices of some citizens, who
discard solid waste, wash motorcycles almost directly in the river, and wash
diapers soiled with feces. These actions directly affect the river's water,
which is used by many residents for domestic purposes.
"The place
where we men bathe is getting closer and closer to where women wash diapers,
spreading children's feces. When we try to advise them, we are insulted. We use
this same water to wash dishes and clothes. I tried to speak with our leaders,
but so far, no one has said anything," stated Armindo Matias Ncalaila, a
Chuanga resident.
In response, residents
are calling for the provision of more potable water in the neighborhood
so they can stop using the Lunho River water. They also ask that authorities
educate people on how to use the river's water in a healthy manner.
"We are
asking you to give us potable water, because we will keep getting sick if we
continue to use this river water. This river is used by many people who come
from different places, and we don't know what it carries," said Ana
Salifo, another Chuanga resident.
While they await a
response from community leaders, the residents are pleading for a change in
attitude from everyone. They appeal for individual and collective
responsibility in preserving the Lunho River and promoting the health of their
community.
