Over 1,500 Mocímboa da Praia residents now have electricity

More than 1,500 residents of the Mocimboa da Praia Municipal Village in northern Cabo Delgado are now benefiting from an electricity supply. This follows the provisional handover of the rehabilitation of high and low-voltage electrical infrastructure, a project carried out as part of the reconstruction of areas affected by terrorism.

According to a statement from the Office of Communication and Image of the Municipal Council of Mocimboa da Praia, "the provisional handover of the rehabilitation of High and Low-Voltage Electrical Infrastructure, consisting of 3km of M.T, 8km of B.T, and 5 Transformer posts," took place on the morning of August 6. The goal is to restore power to the local population.

The project, with a capacity of 160 KVA, "can serve over 1,500 customers," declared Norte Luali, the Director of the Provincial Service for Infrastructure, during the official handover ceremony.

Practical Benefits for the Community

The initiative was met with enthusiasm by the local population, who highlighted the practical benefits of having electricity, such as the ability to preserve products and the opportunity to acquire household appliances. "This was something that was impossible in the past," the statement reads.

Benjamin Isaque, the Permanent Secretary of Mocímboa da Praia District, emphasized the infrastructure's importance to the local economy: "It will improve the quality of life for communities, especially in preserving fish, given that the district's main economic activity is fishing."

Vicente Alfândega, the spokesperson for the Municipal Council, thanked the Provincial and District Governments for their efforts and pointed to another benefit: "the reduction of crime as one of the gains."

The statement also notes that the electrical infrastructure reconstruction project covers five districts severely affected by terrorism like Palma, Quissanga, Muidumbe, Nangade, and Mocímboa da Praia.

This infrastructure investment is an integral part of the reconstruction and stabilization process in northern Cabo Delgado, aimed at ensuring better living conditions and fostering the sustainable development of communities. (Mozanorte)
