Administrator involved in easing tensions between the population and TotalEnergies in Palma

Two weeks ago, Mozanorte reported on the situation unfolding in Afungi, Quitunda, and the Palma district in northern Cabo Delgado, where local residents are demanding the rights they believe are owed to them by the company TotalEnergies.

Although the situation has not yet been resolved, the residents calmed down, believing the company would take immediate action to address the issue.

In an attempt to engage in dialogue, district authorities went to Quitunda to meet with the residents, but they were not heard, with the meeting limited to no significant progress.

A week later, with no signs of progress or any comments on the matter, the residents decided to camp in front of the TotalEnergies company in Afungi for three days, continuing to demand the rights the company has so far refused to pay, despite being overdue for more than five years.

The camp blocked the exit of any vehicles from the company, preventing TotalEnergies from conducting its operations, except for vehicles from the defense and security forces, who had no connection to the company or the situation at hand.

During the three days, the residents organized a shift system, as they could not leave the protest.

On 26/03/2025, feeling the pressure of the situation, the company reached out to the district administrator, who met with the protesters to engage in a dialogue.

After the conversation with the administrator, the residents calmed down and returned to their homes.

However, before leaving, they informed the administrator that if the company does not provide a clear response soon, they will return to continue their demands, and the situation may escalate further. (BP)
