As a result of Cyclone Chido, which severely affected the Nampula province, a person was reported dead after drowning in one of the rivers of the Anchilo administrative post, in the Nampula district of the same-name province.
A citizen, whose
identity has not been confirmed, was accompanied by her mother on their way to
the Anchilo health post during the night. While attempting to cross one of the
rivers in the Wathoro area, it became impossible because of the force of the waters.
The citizen was then swept away by the current and was found dead, without any
assistance from the locals.
In this context, a
reliable source and neighbor of the victim in the Wathoro locality of the
Anchilo administrative post, Nampula province, northern Mozambique, said:
"Last night I was urgently called by my neighbor, who was asking for help
because her daughter was being dragged away. I went out to help, but it was in
vain because she was already dead. She was on her way to the hospital because she
was having health problems," said Mr. António Halavate.
Information in our
possession indicates that this is not the first drowning death in that river in
the Wathoro area. Some residents admit that such incidents happen regularly,
although they usually involve children who play near the river. (Gabriel Cassimo)
