Elephant and Lion movement sparks fear among Quissanga residents

Quissanga, April 2, 2025 (Mozanorte) — The district of Quissanga, located in the Nampula province of Mozambique, has become a growing concern for the residents of Nacoba village, situated in the Mahate administrative post, within Cabo Delgado province.

According to reports from the local population, the movement of elephants and lions has been observed in the vicinity of the community, creating an atmosphere of fear and insecurity among the inhabitants.

So far, there have been no reports of material or personal damage caused by the animals. However, the situation is being closely monitored by local authorities, who remain vigilant for any potential threats to public safety.

The phenomenon has raised significant anxiety, particularly because elephants and lions are known for their strength and unpredictability, which can pose a serious danger to both humans and local agriculture. Local populations, including those who rely on farming (or machamba), have been forced to adapt by taking extra precautions to protect their livelihoods.

The situation underscores the need for increased strategies to manage human-wildlife conflict, particularly in areas where wildlife habitats overlap with human settlements. Local authorities, alongside wildlife conservation groups, are expected to continue monitoring the situation and take necessary measures to ensure the safety of both residents and wildlife.
