It
has been ten years since the tertiary road connecting the district headquarters
of Balama to the Administrative Post of Mavala last received any rehabilitation
works.
This
prolonged neglect reflects a clear lack of interest and disrespect toward the
residents, who claim that the authorities show no real intention of solving the
problem, despite the road linking two important regions.
The
19-kilometre stretch (Balama–Maval) remains unrepaired, even though Balama is a
district rich in natural resources. It is home to graphite extractiom often
referred to as and is considered the breadbasket of Cabo Delgado province, with
significant production of cash crops such as soybeans, sesame, maize, and
others.
“It’s
not just the Mavala Administrative Post. Almost all tertiary roads in the
Balama district have never been rehabilitated,” said several visibly frustrated
residents.
Locals
also added that even the district administrator's delegation avoids the main
road when visiting Mavala. Instead, they take alternative routes via
Balama-sede, the village of Ntete, Magaia, and Mpaka to reach the
administrative post. For this reason, residents urge the authorities to make a
greater effort to resolve the issue.
Although the poor state of the access roads has been raised multiple times during rallies and public gatherings led by government officials at various levels, residents believe that the situation is likely to persist in the coming days, according to another local who spoke on condition of anonymity.
