Ten (10) Chinese nationals have been arrested by the Mozambican Republic Police (PRM) in Niassa province after being found in possession of a cache of firearms and other sensitive equipment. The operation took place at a gold mining site located in the administrative post of Lupiliche, in the Lago district.
According to the spokesperson for the PRM’s Provincial Command in Niassa, Nelson de Sousa, the individuals were apprehended at the site, where police seized 21 shotguns, one Makarov pistol, and 103 rounds of ammunition. In addition to the firearms, police also confiscated five handcuffs, three batons, three vehicles, and eight mobile phones.
“The authorities are currently investigating the intended use of this equipment,” said Nelson de Sousa, noting that the suspects are in police custody while legal and forensic investigations are underway.
The discovery of such weaponry in mining zones raises concerns about security and the legality of activities being carried out in the region. Police are working to determine any links to illegal practices. (Mozanorte)
