The Planning and Budget Commission of the Assembly of the Republic has urged the government of Cabo Delgado province to strengthen coordination with companies in the extractive and natural gas industries to ensure strict compliance with their social obligations.
This recommendation was made by Helena Kalime, Chair of the Parliamentary Commission, during an oversight visit recently conducted in several districts of the province.
According to Kalime, during meetings with local communities, numerous complaints were raised regarding the limited involvement of local labor in economic projects, as well as the minimal impact of the social responsibility initiatives implemented by companies.
"The communities expressed concern that many of these projects are not bringing direct benefits to the local population, either in terms of employment or access to basic infrastructure and services," the MP emphasized.
Cabo Delgado province is home to major natural resource extraction projects, particularly in the sectors of natural gas and minerals areas that have raised significant expectations for the region’s socioeconomic development.
The Planning and Budget Commission also called for greater transparency and oversight in the implementation of the companies’ commitments to ensure that natural resources genuinely contribute to the well-being of local communities. (Mozanorte)
