CEMAL resolves 240 out of 261 labour disputes in Nampula in first falf of 2025

The Centre for Labour Mediation and Arbitration (CEMAL) in Nampula Province successfully mediated 240 out of 261 registered labour disputes during the first six months of 2025, achieving a 90% resolution rate.

This information was disclosed on Monday during CEMAL’s semi-annual performance review. According to the Centre’s Director, most of the cases were related to unfair dismissals, particularly in private companies that were severely impacted by the violent protests that occurred at the end of 2024 and the beginning of 2025.

Despite the challenges, the director noted that the labour conflict situation in the province is gradually stabilizing. “We consider the current scenario in Nampula to be stable, although there are still significant challenges,” said Rui Tomás.

The private security sector was identified as having the highest number of labour disputes in the province. In response, CEMAL has intensified awareness campaigns among employers to help prevent further conflicts.

Authorities remain concerned about ongoing violations of labour laws, especially cases of unjustified dismissals. “It is deeply worrying that some employers continue to disregard labour regulations, particularly when workers are dismissed without just cause. In such cases, we intervene as a last resort, after exhausting efforts to raise awareness,” the director added.

Ussene Rodrigues, representing the Secretary of State for Nampula Province, highlighted the importance of institutional cooperation for effective conflict resolution. “The success of CEMAL’s work also depends on strong collaboration with justice sector institutions. This review serves as an opportunity for deep reflection on the socio-labour situation in our province,” he stated.

Both workers and employers were urged to prioritize dialogue and seek assistance from CEMAL in resolving disputes amicably, in an effort to promote stability and harmony in the workplace across the province. (Mozanorte)
