Poaching is decimating wildlife in Mueda

Although it may seem like a pastime, poaching is decimating the wildlife in the forests of Mueda district, in northern Cabo Delgado a problem unfolding under the indifferent gaze of authorities who appear powerless to take effective action.

Unlicensed hunters set out on hunting expeditions with their dogs, operating both in Mueda and neighboring areas. After some time, they return home with large quantities of meat and numerous animals killed yet without generating any revenue for the State.

Moreover, the meat from this illegal activity is often sold at public auctions, with no questions raised about its legality. Even worse, it is often the local officials themselves who purchase these products and walk away without consequences.

A recent image circulating on social media, showing a young man holding three sanguins in his arms, clearly illustrates the situation: poaching in the region is seen as a risk-free activity with no accountability. (AA)
